If you run a site with a homepage and a handful of category or hub pages underneath it, there's a decent chance both are quietly competing for the same search terms. Google ends up unsure which page actually represents your "best fit" answer, so it alternates between them, ranks both weakly, or picks the one you'd least want to show up. This is keyword cannibalization, and homepages are one of the most common places it happens because they're built to be broad by design.
What Keyword Cannibalization Actually Is (And Why Homepages Are Especially Prone to It)
Cannibalization happens when two or more pages on the same site target the same or very similar search intent, so they split ranking signals instead of reinforcing one clear answer. Search engines don't rank the same domain twice for a query if they can help it — they pick whichever version looks like the stronger match at that moment, and that choice can flip from week to week as content, links, and crawl signals shift slightly.
Homepages get pulled into this more than almost any other page type. A homepage usually has the most internal links pointing at it, the most accumulated authority, and copy that's written to describe the whole business — which often means it repeats the exact phrases a category page was built to own. If your homepage says "the best backlink monitoring tool for bloggers" and your /backlink-monitoring category page targets the same phrase, you've built two pages competing for the same slot.
How to Tell If Your Homepage Is Cannibalizing a Category Page
The clearest signal comes straight from Search Console: filter the Performance report by query and look for cases where a single search term shows impressions split across two URLs, especially if the ranking position for both is mediocre (past position 15–20) rather than one page clearly winning. A pattern worth watching for specifically is a query where the reported position bounces significantly between checks — that volatility is often Google testing which of your own pages to serve.
A second check is manual: search the exact phrase you think your category page should own, using site:yourdomain.com "exact phrase", and see which URL Google actually returns. If it's consistently the homepage rather than the page you built for that purpose, the category page isn't getting credit for the work you put into it.
A third, easy-to-miss cause is internal linking. If most of your internal anchor text pointing at the homepage happens to use the same phrase your category page targets, you're actively telling Google the homepage is the relevant match — regardless of what either page's content actually says.
Picking the Right "Parent" Keyword for Each Page
The fix starts with intent, not word count. Ask what someone typing that query actually wants to see next: if they want a single tool or overview page, the homepage should own the broad term. If they want a comparison, a filtered list, or feature-specific detail, that belongs on the category page — and the broad homepage term should be adjusted to something one level more general, or one level more specific, so the two no longer overlap.
In practice this usually means assigning the "head" term (higher volume, broader intent) to whichever page actually resolves that intent best, and pushing the other page toward a more qualified variant. A homepage might reasonably own "backlink monitoring tool," while a category page owns "backlink monitoring for agencies" or "free backlink monitoring" — related, but no longer identical targets.
Fixing It: Titles, Internal Links, and When to Merge Pages
Once you've assigned a parent keyword to each page, three changes usually resolve most cannibalization:
- Rewrite title tags and H1s so they're distinct. If both pages currently read almost identically, adjust one to reflect its actual scope (a feature list, a comparison, a specific use case) rather than restating the brand-level pitch.
- Repoint internal links to match intent. Audit anchor text across your site and make sure links using the broad term point to the page you want to win that term, and links using the narrower variant point to the other page.
- Consolidate if the pages genuinely serve the same intent. Sometimes cannibalization is a sign that two pages shouldn't both exist — thin category pages that duplicate the homepage's message are candidates for merging content into one stronger page and 301-redirecting the other, rather than trying to keep both alive with slightly different wording.
Common Mistakes That Make Cannibalization Worse
The most common misstep is fixing the title tag but leaving the body copy and internal links untouched — Google reads the whole picture, not just the <title> element, so a mismatched signal anywhere in the page can undo the change. Another is adding more content to both pages to "strengthen" them; without a clear intent split, more content just gives the algorithm more overlapping text to compare, which can make the ambiguity worse rather than better.
It's also worth resisting the urge to fix this once and move on. New category pages, new blog posts that happen to target the homepage's phrase, and evolving internal link structures all reopen the door to the same problem. Keeping an eye on which URL Google is actually serving for your core terms — and catching it when a query starts splitting across two pages — is the kind of ongoing check that's easy to skip until rankings quietly slip.
